چکیده
Rapid microbial tests ensure testing in rapid and accurate manners at reasonable costs. The ideal test should achieve detection of certain types of microorganisms that are undetected by the pharmacopoeia-defined sterility tests and its accuracy should be confirmed by regulatory authorities. The use of pharmacopoeia sterility tests is limited since they can detect only microorganisms that are viable only in specified media. A rapid test that can detect viable bacteria and microbes that cannot be cultured and never fails in bacterial detection, should appeal to the regulatory authorities. In the agar mediumculture system employed in the pharmacopoeia-microbial test, the test results may be erroneously false negative when the viable bacteria fail to grow under the defined incubation conditions, when inhibitors are present in the test sample, or when scientific approaches are not available to differentiate negative from false negative results. On the other hand, rapid microbial tests with false positive results due to noise caused by detection principle, measurement device, or non-biologic positive substance, imposes huge industrial challenges. In this review, we discuss the rapid microbial tests classified according to various systems for detection of microorganisms and their application, and then introduce some commercial applications of existing devices for detection of microorganisms and provide details of microbial test features, and compare the purposes of the microbial tests.

Rapid methods for the immunodiagnosis of infectious diseases: recent developments.
Current techniques for rapid diagnosis of microbial infections by direct detection of the microbial agent are compared. The techniques include enzyme immunoassay (EIA) tests, immunofluorescence, latex agglutination assays, and nucleic acid hybridization procedures. It is concluded that, for the near future, the preferred methods for rapid diagnosis will be by (1) EIA tests utilizing monoclonal ...
متن کاملComparison of Dot-ELISA with microbial culture for detection of Brucella spp. in clinical specimens
Definitive diagnosis of brucellosis is made by isolation of the causative agents, which is a timeconsumingprocedure. To evaluate the efficacy of Dot-ELISA for detecting brucellae in clinical samples, 94different specimens taken from animal origin were cultured on brucella selective culture media and colonieswere identified biochemically. The specimens were also examined after centrifugation by ...
متن کاملRapid pathogen-specific phenotypic antibiotic susceptibility testing using digital LAMP quantification in clinical samples.
Rapid antimicrobial susceptibility testing (AST) is urgently needed for informing treatment decisions and preventing the spread of antimicrobial resistance resulting from the misuse and overuse of antibiotics. To date, no phenotypic AST exists that can be performed within a single patient visit (30 min) directly from clinical samples. We show that AST results can be obtained by using digital nu...
متن کاملRapid herpes simplex virus susceptibility testing using an enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay performed in situ on fixed virus-infected monolayers.
An enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay was performed directly on fixed, virus-infected cell monolayers to rapidly determine the susceptibility of herpes simplex virus to antiviral drugs. Susceptibility determinations by this method correlated well with those obtained by plaque reduction assay and avoided some of the drawbacks of other methods currently available.
متن کاملSelf-assembled magnetic bead biosensor for measuring bacterial growth and antimicrobial susceptibility testing.
Bacterial antibiotic resistance is one of the major concerns of modern healthcare worldwide, and the development of rapid, growth-based, antimicrobial susceptibility tests is key for addressing it. The cover image shows a self-assembled asynchronous magnetic bead rotation (AMBR) biosensor developed for rapid detection of bacterial growth. Using the biosensors, the minimum inhibitory concentrati...
